          TRAFFIC ISLAND PRISON FARM

              2010
Good Children Gallery, New Orleans, LA

The ideas for Traffic Island Prison Farm grew out of a project titled Lock Down where members of Good Children Gallery spent 48 hours locked in the gallery. I wrote continuously on 3’ wide by 10’ long sheets of paper then hung the resulting writings on the gallery walls. By the end of the two days I had filled all the walls in the back gallery. After the show I took the sheets of automatic writing and mined them for stories and ideas written over that period. These stories were then recorded as audio tracks and a corresponding drawing or sculpture was created. The audience could then listen to each story through headphones while viewing the piece.

The second component of Traffic Island Prison Farm was a series of prints that were created using a system of controlled and uncontrolled marks. For the controlled marks I created two woodblocks, a target and a shield. For the uncontrolled marks I took the target out and with the help of fellow sculptor and weapons expert Kenny Lantz shot the target with a 12 gauge shotgun and 40 caliber Smith and Wesson. For the shield I built a jousting stick with an angle grinder head. I then used the shield to protect myself from the jousting stick thus creating the uncontrolled marks. Both woodblocks were then printed and shown along side the videos of their making.
