EVERY REVOLUTION
1992
The Omar Bakery
Columbus, OH
Preformed in an old bread factory, Every Revolution addressed revolution as both a continuous cycle and radical change. The performance began on the roof of the factory with a text that was transmitted to the audience through a speaker on the end of a 10-foot spinning rope. With machines built into the architecture of the building, the audience was guided through the space by their movement.
The performance centered around a dialogue between the two performers in both English and Irish. With one seated under an internally lit oil drum and the other operating a treadle-powered boot-marching machine, the performers recounted McClay’s experience of being trapped in Nepal during the coup of 1990. Malcolm McClay and dancer Helen Meyers performed the work.
