THE BIG SILENCE

1987
N.M.S.U. Museum
Las Cruces, NM

This two-piece sculpture powered by myself and another performer, rotated on a central axis for five minutes every two hours from noon until midnight.

The Big Silence got its name from the big science state, a nickname given to New Mexico because of its involvement in the nuclear weapons industry. The piece was a comment on the lack of willingness of people in Las Cruces to acknowledge or speak about White Sands Missile Range and what occurred there. Apart from New Mexico State University, White Sands was Las Cruces’ primary industry.
