SWOLLEN EYE
1994
Neutral Corner Boxing Gym
New Orleans, LA
Performed in a 20,000-foot warehouse turned boxing gym, Swollen Eye featured hanging mechanical sculptures, a 26-foot tornado costume, a 300-gallon indoor waterfall, and a fiberglass staircase of clothes. Visualizing one’s body as a complete weather system, the performance became a metaphor for the sometimes stormy and sometimes serene human emotional condition. Rather than characters, the performers took on the role of elements moving in response to each other.
Swollen Eye was performed by Malcolm McClay, Jeff Becker, Anthony, Favre and Nancy Smith Hall, with an original sound score by Chris Becker and Dan Sumner.
Swollen Eye was made possible by a Regional Projects Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
