SURVEILLANCE CHAIR
1991
Hopkins Hall
Columbus, OH
Surveillance Chair addressed issues of surveillance trust and personal space. When I moved to Columbus, Ohio I had helicopters with huge lights fly over my apartment, lighting up the street almost every night. This brought back memories of my time spent in Belfast as an undergraduate, when British army helicopters sat in the sky above the city 24 hours a day.
A chair was placed in the hallway of the art building and sat there for two days. Without anyone’s knowledge I had climbed into the chair at 6am on the first day. I remained there without anyone knowing until the middle of the second day, when I dismantled the chair from the inside out. When people saw me emerge they realized I had been there the entire time and had listened to all their conversations. I had violated their trust and now held personal information on them as currency.
