BODY FLUID BED

Body Fluid Bed was built in response to visiting Toul Sleng prison in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. During the years of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, S21 (as it was then known) was a high school that was used as an interrogation and torture center to purge Cambodia of intellectuals and perceived dissidents. Over 17,000 people were taken there to be interrogated and tortured. They were then taken to the concentration camp at Choeung Ek to be executed. The bed has a fourteen-foot funnel that becomes a person hanging upside down at the bottom. I wanted the bed to appear as though it contained the combined body fluids of all those chained to the torture beds at Security Prison 21.
